I will attempt the tips from your posts.

For the record I have paid attention to all of your *CRITICAL* and *REBOOT* instructions.

Hopefully tomorrow it will work!

Has anyone had any problems when they changed the mpeg from mpeg16 to mpeg2 in RC1? When playing the file in mpeg 16, the file id on the PS3 will say mpeg2 until you watch the video where it says mepg1. Then after changing the mpeg to 2, the file doesn't work.

PLEASE HELP ME, I WOULD LOVE TO ENJOY EVERYTHING THAT THIS SOFTWARE HAS TO OFFER. thankxs in advace..

Karnag3:

It's a good guide and I'm sure it will help a lot of users.
However, I don't think going to other threads and posting "don't try that, just follow my guide" is such a good idea.
Users have tried and had success with other methods as well.

For one thing, I cannot recommend setting transcoding option to 'Always'.
If all else fails and as a last resort, then maybe yes.
One, it's going to waste a large amount of your hard drive, so you will need to periodically delete unused files manually or from TVersity's settings.
Two, transcoding is slow, so fast forwarding or go to function will not work.
Third, transcoding, by nature, will have loss of quality.
Say what you will, but some people want to keep 720p quality with 5.1 audio.

Frankly, I only needed ffdshow to properly transcode any files not supported natively by PS3.
When I had problems, uninstalling and reinstalling ffdshow fixed them.
And I'm happy to use mkv2vob or tsmuxer to convert mkv to vob or m2ts, so that I can stream without transcoding.
Remuxing using those programs only takes about 2 - 5 mins, so I can't see a downside of it.

Again, I'm glad people are getting help from your guide, but it's not the only solution.

Followed everything to the letter and now I have .mkv video playback working however when playing .mkv files the sound is severely distorted making everyone sound like they have been filtered through a slow talking robot voice filter. Any suggestions ?

The files I am trying to play are 720p HDTV x264 rips of mainly Battlestar Gallactica if that helps at all.

Edit.

On closer testing it would seem that all the media files with AC3 sound are also suffering from the same distorted sound issue, Help !!!!

I wanted to post that following these instructions worked, generally, and now allow me to play mkv files WITH subtitles! I pulled a lot of hair out with a bajillion different settings and software and this guide helped out a lot.

I said generally though for a reason. As written, this didn't get me subtitles, and mkv sound was broken for some files. The sound was due to fdshow's audio decoder trying to handle PCM, and per someone else's guide on these forums (I can't remember where I saw it unfortunately) I disabled all pcm decoding so that the AC3 filter would handle it. This fixed the sound.

The subtitles also would not work as written. I used the Vista Codec pack which installs directvobsub to handle subtitles, and for MKV files defaults to the Haali media splitter. I thought directvobsub was the problem and removed it, but still nothing. I'm only mentioning it as I'm not sure it was part of the problem at all. What finally did it was switching from the default Haali media splitter to the Gabest media splitter for my mkv files. This can be done in the start menu shortcuts under 32-bit tools and mkv settings, as it lets you change the splitter for them via a shortcut. I did this again based on a recommendation from another user on these forums but can't remember who. You still must turn on subtitles per this guide in fdshow with those checkboxes. The explanation by the other user for the need for this was that the haali media splitter was not allowing fdshow to handle subtitles properly, but gabest does.

Just my experience, but hope it helps some others out there deal with this incredibly frustrating problem. Now I just wish I could find a trick to gain enough efficiency so my pc can handle 1080p h264 transcoding :)

you're my hero, but i still have one issue!

Postby proxemics on Wed Jul 02, 2008 11:28 pm

I have spent so much time over the last few days trying to get this work, and thanks to you, im gold!

My only issue now is my folders. I have a maxtor shared storage drive networked to all my computers, but it wont work in TVersity. I have done the recommend changes to have it LogOnAs an administrator, but when I try to add the folder on the shared network into TVersity I keep getting cannot access or does not exist. I have followed directions on the FAQ and in these forums, to no avail. Would the fact that the drive is password protected make a difference? Its set up with the maxtor software and I unlock it before I open TVersity.

Any help on this would be much appreciated as all my files are on there... thanks! and thanks so much again for getting me this far and getting it working!

Followed every step but ending when I select at PS3 a video, this gives network, DLNA protocol errors and TVersity goes offline.

KarnaG3,

Thanks for all the help maybe your fixes have not helped everyone but I know that they have helped me. If you don't mind and have the time could you please send me all your audio/video fixes hints and ideas for running Tversity, as I would like to compile them into a word document for future use. Thanks.

What are the advantages of having tversity run as a separate user?

I usually have trouble forwarding and rewinding videos files when transcoded is required or it's set to always transcode.

Has anyone else experienced this? Are there any tweaks that can be tried?

Never said it was.

However, a lot of people don't know how to use conversiont tools and want an easier solution.

Also, transcoding MKV still gives me the same quality as the original file. Technically speaking, the bitrate is slightly lower, but the visual quality is unnoticed.

Also, once you "unpack" your MKV file and allow it to be read as VOB, you have essentially converted it to a DVD. It would probably be easier for most if they simply burnt the MKV file to a DVD and played the DVD on the PS3.

Using MKV conversion tools are ok for those of us who ARE computer savvy but this program is supposed to be an all-in-one solution, and I'm attempting to help make it so for those who want that.

1) The hard drive space used is able to be set for your Temporary Files in Tversity. It will only use the amount you allow.

2) Fast forward and rewind work fine for me, even with MKV. *I suggest trying the "go to" function on the PS3 menu, this is actually a little more convenient IMO.

3) Transcoding will not, by nature, have a loss of quality. Transcoding is doing nothing more than reading the file and sending a data stream that the PS3 can read. In some cases, depending on your personal audio/video settings in your codecs, you may or may not see a degredation of quality. This is adjustable, and I recommend playing around with it to see if you can get better results.

4) (just to be complete) Transcoding of files natively read by PS3 helps to resolve *some* skipping/incompatibility issues that would otherwise result in loss of quality if played by PS3 natively anyway. This is due to variations in the DivX format, WMV format, AVI format, etc.

If you want to sort thru all of your video and filter out the ones that can be and can't be played by PS3 and then sort them into folders for ones to be transcoded and handled by Tversity and ones to be read natively by PS3, be my guest. Its just kind of a pain for someone like me who has about 1 1/2 terabytes of video.
