Media Player = D-Link DSM 520
Network Attached Storage = D-Link DSM-G600
Wireless Router = D-Link DI 624
I'm new to all this, so I hope my question makes sense.
My NAS has built-in UPnP, and I am able to use it even if my computer is off, which is a very nice feature. Unfortunately I like TVersity much better, and I would like to use it as my media server even if my computer is off. My question: Can I install TVersity on my NAS and have it run instead D-Link's built in NAS media server?
Thank you in advance!

No sorry we do not support this as a hack. TVersity has been built such that it can run on NAS however it will be up to DLink to license it and put in on their NAS, it is not something that users can do on their own.

Ronen
I'm sure a lot of the folk in this forum (and elsewhere !), and not just DLink users, would like a TVersity-enabled NAS - how can we help move this forward ?

As an Infrant owner I would also like TVersity on my NAS. However, I thought that most of the NAS products don't have the horsepower to do transcoding which is one of the advantages of TVersity.

ablevy, you are correct that transcoding won't work for videos, but audio transcoding should work and this by itself is valuable enough for many users. With regard to videos, putting TVersity on a DVR can be the ultimate solution since it will allow TVersity to use the DVR hardware for transcoding and it will allow the users to access their DVR content around the house and soon also on the go.
Wal, we do not believe in hacking devices against the vendor will so there is really nothing to do, other than help us convince NAS and DVR manufacturers to license TVersity.

Simply by generating more awareness and visibility to our service. We are talking to some of these people but these kind of things take time, a lot of time, especially when taking into account that CE companies prefer someone to give them the whole solution including the reference implementation for the media player. The notion of a best in breed media server that is valuable enough to license even if they need to get the media player someplace else is not yet resonating with them. This is where end user demand can help. I guess the typical CE company mindset I am describing here explains why software that comes bundled with some hardware is more often than not crappy...

I am happy with Twonky's media server on my NAS - but it's really not a choice I have made since it's the only media player out there for NAS! (Mediabolic isn't worth a thing...)
It would be nice to try TVersity out BUT the only way this is going to happen is to have NAS producers embed the server:
SO: Are there any NAS products with TVersity embedded?
Kos
PS: Auto signature still not working in the TVersity forum?

Hi, very new to all this but found this post
'I have a couple disks hanging off my NSLU2. I un-declocked it to 266 mhz from its stock 133mhz. I run HD content off of it to my XB360 with no trouble at all.
I have tversity running in a VMware session pulling data off the slug, and delivering it to the 360 over cat5 and it works like a charm. Any decent HD should be able to run without spin down for years. My old 80/250/300 mbyte drives on my BBS server back in the day still actually run.. and they put in years online with no spin down.'
in this thread
http://forums.tversity.com/viewtopic.ph ... 2db6ba3e97
So it looks like it can be done ?

I run FreeNAS (
www.freenas.org) on a very old PC with a few HDs. That creates a SHARE that I map to a drive on my PC where I run TVersity. Really no issues with the NAS part of things. I use a DSM-320. I'm still dialing in a few things with that, like subtitles. Also, a couple of video formats create a little chop when the scenes have a lot of video change (panning, etc) but I've verified by using a local drive that the issue isn't related to the NAS.

i would assume that most nas drives would have a section in the configuration that will have pictures video and music . tv versity streams from the internet your wii or xbox or playstation3 is connected to the internet and so is your nas so if your nas is connected to your router via ethernet cable and your wii for instance is connected to the internet you point tversity to the outside address of your router to reach your nas if you are using nat which you should be able to
stream your films, photos and music to your tv in theory still working through practical
