Suggestion for mkv - convert to mp4

Postby hpower1 » Fri Feb 04, 2011 9:40 pm

Hey all,

been using my ps3 for some time now as a media streamer. Really like it. Only thing I still had trouble with is mkv files. I even ripped up carpet to run a hardline for a wired net connection. Helped, but the biggest thing I wanted was to fast forward or use the go to function. That was a no go. Go to was really important to me. I never am able to watch a movie in its entirety.

Anyway, I finally found what I was looking for. I knew since mkv is just a container, like mp4, I knew I should not have to re-encode the video and max out my pc for hours on end for 1 movie file. Solution: xmedia recode

Works perfectly. Can convert mkv movies to mp4 in minutes (big 1080p movies take up to 10 mins)(i run a core2duo). No video re-encode needed. Keeps the 5.1 surround sound. And best of all, fast forward and the go to works perfectly. Works fantastic so far on all my 720 and 1080 movies.

Anyway, here is the links:

guide - this is what I found to use this program. Great guide.

Just wanted to share. This helped me greatly and makes my ps3 all I want in a media streamer. I hope someone else can get some use from this. Only problem is subtitles. No easy way to hard-code them (I posted this question to the guide author and he wrote back with his solution). I still haven't gotten this to work with an external sub file but haven't tried that hard, as I only have 1 movie right now I would even want that feature for.

Will keep me happy for much longer, allowing me to delay building a htpc for a little while longer.
