Third party software that emulates a network media player?

Dear all,

The TVersity FAQ states that even without a hardware media client, one can use TVersity with "third party software that emulates a network media player and conforms to the UPNP / DLNA standard".

I wish to use another PC on my network (well, actually off the LAN but linked by an SSH tunnel, but that should not matter) running such software to access the media on my main machine running TVersity.

Could anyone please advise on any such network media player emulators?

If you want to control and playback the AV media in a full/pure UPnP manner, than as I have said a few times before in the Tversity forums, possibly the combination of :-

o Cidero UPnP Controller www.cidero.com
o Intel Tools UPnP AV Media renderer http://www.intel.com/cd/ids/developer/a ... /index.htm

To my knowledge there is no clear leading software application out there that Provides UPnP Media control and playback on/across multi OS platforms.

Please be aware that the above are not proven as solid and reliable with TVersity across a network etc..

I welcome someone pointing me in the direction of a good UPnP Controller and Player for Windows PC's that works with TVersity.

Yes I know that TVersity provides a web based playback method but have yet to be convinced it's as good in daily use as a well designed UPnP Controller/Player Application. Media streamer running on the Nokia 770 Internet Tablet has convinced me that a good combined UPnP Controller/Player application on a PC OS.

Is this idea so silly and outdated, thoughts welcome....

I am aware about Nero MediaHome providing a UPnP Renderer solution but remember people complaining that it was not very stable. I wonder what its like in latest guise under Nero 7 Premium Reloaded?

I believe CyberLink and Intervideo also offer similar solutions. None of them is free however and I do not know if any of them is any good.

the new windows media player for windows vista can detect UPnP media and this seems to work fine for me. I'm currently running vista rc1 and it detects tversity on my other computer over my wireless network and plays it like it was part of the same library. only problem is that the full version of vista isn't out until january.

I had heard about Vista providing both UPnP Server and Player built into/with WMP11. Have not tried it yet as I would need to install TVersity on another PC. When you say WMP11 works with TVersity UPnP what AV formats did you try/test and what settings had you applied to TVersity etc.

I feel that there is a gap in market for very Slick UPnP Application that provides a Controller/Player interface to control local and remote playback on a UPnP Renderer such as the SL300i. (Like say Media Streamer on Nokia 770, mixed with Cidero functionality for PC's, build from the ground up Multi-OS platform widget like perhaps?) Oh well I can dream....

i just had my music in its standard 192Kbps wma format (how all my music is) with the default tversity settings. unfortunately i'm now back at uni so unable to do any further tests on it

I still don't see where to browse in WMP11 on XP. Did they remove the functionality after RC1?

I am totally with you Mike, I am seeing the same thing you are and just can not end up with what I am wanting. Cidero is helpful but not the ultimate solution I would like. Control of my songs, playlists and jukebox functionality is working ok with Cidero and TVersity, but not always. And it is just not flexible like I would hope.

its a feature which is only available for wmp11 for windows vista, not xp. one of microsoft's reasons to try and make you upgrade
