TVersity on a Samsung TV - now with the full feature set

Postby eladm » Tue Dec 01, 2009 11:55 pm

Hello All Samsung owners,

Aside from the creation of a profile suitible for Samsung - a topic which was dealt with here: http://forums.tversity.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=10992 - until recently there was no solution for pausing, FF, resuming play from last time (the blue button), no thumbnails in "Pictures" mode etc.
Well - you might be interested in the solution DD4ever found - SamyGo.

Here is a step-by-step, that should work for anyone with a "Content Library" feature. Once you follow it, you will have all these missing features. It will be just like playing from a USB stick - but from yout TVersity server.

Here goes:
1. Download this zip : http://sourceforge.net/projects/samygo/files/SamyGO%20Kernel%20Modules/SamyGO%20All%20Extensions%20v0.02.zip/download

2. Extract the zip it into a USB stick

3. Plug the USB stick in the TV, and go to "Content Library"

4. Choose "Content Management" (the icon with "WWW" on it)

5. In the menu there, go to the USB, and then move to the right side, and choose "Games"

6. You should see a new "Game" there called "SamyGo Extentions". Mark it with the yellow button. Then choose "Copy"

7. Leave this menu to go back to the main "Content Library" menu

8. Make sure you leave the USB stick in place - do not remove it.

9. Choose "Games" in the main menu of "Content Library"

10. You should see some of the games you have already, and the new game "SamyGo Extentions". Run it

11. There will be funny colors displayed on the screen, and after 1 or 2 seconds you should see a notification for a new device "USB UPNP". This is good.

12. Exit and go to the "Media Play" as you normaly do. Press the red botton, and you should see the new UPNP device. Choose it.

13. You should now see yout TVersity server, and you can then navigate normally.

That's it - you can pause, FF etc - just like you would play the movie off the USB stick.

The next time you turn the TV on, just make sure you have any USB stick plugged to the TV. Then wait a bit for the network connection to kick in (a couple of seconds for "Wireless", less for "Wired" ) and run the "SamyGo" game - and your set to go.

If you are an advanced user, you might want to add your TVersity IP address - to make finding it quicker:
Before copying SamyGO to the TV, just edit this file : SamyGO/etc/init.d/03_03_nfsmount.init and add your IP address here :
Code: Select all
DEST_DIR=/dtv/usb/nfs
SERVER="TVERSITY_IP_ADDRESS"

This made a huge difference for me. Hope you will enjoy it as well. I personalty thing Samsung should pay the guys in SamyGO for doing Samsung's work.

Yes, this is really good. Thanks hydra for the walk through but specially DD4ever for showing us the possibility.
If it doesn't seem to work and you're using a wireless connection then you probably started the "game" too soon.

Did anyone manage to get subtitles working with this patch?

I managed to get subs working by following this guide: http://www.davieslim.com/ps3/tversity-to-ps3/
Unfortunately, transcoding seems to lower the video quality a lot, even if i have everything set to high(optimize for quality, minimum compression etc). Are there any settings for a near lossless transcoding?

LE: i managed to get quality better by editing the config.xml and setting the videoCompressionRatio to 0 and the audioCompressionRatio to 1 (setting it to 0 made all files dissapear in the Samsung media content menu)

Now i have another problem, i can't see mkv files??

I cant see mkv or mp4 files using upnp and my compression settings are 24 & 8. Are you sure thats what made the files dissapear? I asked about missing file types with upnp on here recently, but received no answer or suggestions.
I do see mkv and mp4 using DLNA but no pause, ff etc...

After some more testing it seems that setting the compressionratio's to lower than 8 made Tversity server crash, and that was the reason i couldn't see any files. But i am sure that i ONCE managed to play an avi with videocompression set to 0 without crashing. In the mean time, i changed to Serviio, it has all the features tversity has and can play mkvs or use external subtitles, even in DLNA mode (no more need for Upnp) :D

I'd like too thank those involved for all their hard work in trying to get these samsung TV's working better with tvirsity.

I've tried this usb fix, and i got it working fine, except i don't see mkv files, so for now ill stick with samsung PC share manager, as i can play MKV's through that, with the option to pause, and also see subtitles, aswell as FF and RW divx files.

I really do hope you keep up the good work and overcome these problems, as i would really like to have tvirsity as my number one program with my samsung tv.

Thanks for your reply i cant say it made a difference that i could see, however i have found out something that i think might help with this problem.

It would seem that MKV files that are under 2 gig play fine, FF RW resume all seem to work great, which is fantastic, you just need to find away to show the bigger files it would seem, i hope you can find a fix, because having these features is just wonderful, and makes all the difference.

So all MKV's over 2gig don't show up when browsing the folders.

Fingers crossed :).

This 2GB/4GB issue is addressed in the general FAQ:

Unfortunately, many devices won’t play files larger than 4GB (and sometimes even larger than 2 GB as is the case for the Sony PSP), or will abort the playback once the 4 GB (or 2 GB) point in the file is reached. The TVersity media server is not limited in any way and can handle any size files (ok, not any size but up to 64 bit sized files), however most of the software out there (including the firmware of most devices) is limited to file size that can be represented with 32 bits (which is 2 GB when representing positive and negative numbers and 4 GB when representing only positive numbers)

Thanks for the info gregh_oh, but i know for sure that the b650 i own will play large MKV files, as I've played files as large as 22gig either directly through a USB external drive plugged directly into the TV, or using tvirsity as a DLNA server to the TV using an Ethernet cable, or using samsung PC share manager in the same way. So not unless USB UPNP has a limited file size, i have hope that someone will find a solution, although i know very little about the ins and outs of these thing, fingers crossed though...:).

Ted, Checkout the thread at https://sourceforge.net/apps/phpbb/samygo/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=169 This is how I use the Samba server and it plays just about everything I have just as if I were using the usb drive. The only problem I had then was a few files saying Resolution not supported. I downloaded AVI FourCC Code changer at http://www.inmatrix.com/files/avic_download.shtml. Run it on the files that dont work and change the fourCC used codec to xvid (just type it in even if its a divx file) Now every divx, xvid, mkv, mp4, mpg I have work great, including FF, Skip, pause and resume
