Thats exactly why it works.. I play a can play an AVI/DivX/MP4 on my ps3 natively in all its glory..
I can verify this on the tVersity status page.. all it shows is the progress of the stream.. there is no transcoding in process (and cpu load is not as high)
The only circumstance in which transcoding takes place is during mkv playback.. it forces the file into an mpg format according to the transcode status

keep your fingers crossed on future support.. but I dont see it as likely as MKV has been around for ages.. it wasnt till recently that the format blew up considering all the HD material out there now a days.. I would agree though.. MS and Sony most likely do not want to promote the format considering their efforts to stop piracy.. they dont want to make it any easier..

I suggest a build if you know what you are doing. I run a HTPC for all my entertainment purposes running win7 and a few additional codecs. Check out http:://www.thegreenbutton.com I found a lot of useful information in regards to a home build. It will run you a couple a hundred dollars though. Match that with a nice A/V receiver and you got yourself a nice entertainment center.
